A baker’s dozen of athletes from the Caledonia winter sports teams have earned post-season honors that include all conference, all area and all state awards from both boys and girls basketball and wrestling teams.
Leading the way is Warrior senior Taylor Winjum, who was named to the class AA all state honorable mention squad after leading Caledonia to the MSHSL Section 1AA finals and a 22-8 record this season.
The 5’6” senior finished her career with Caledonia with over 1,300 total points, including 535 this season for a 19.1 points-per-game average. Winjum, who was the La Crosse Tribune player of the year as a junior, was named to the paper’s all area first team again this season and will play in the MSHSL all-star game. Winjum was also named to the Three Rivers Conference all-conference team.
Joining Winjum on the first team are fellow seniors Maddy Mullins and Maria Fruechte. Mullins averaged 15 points and five rebounds per game and was also named to the Tribune’s all-area third team. Fruechte earned honorable mention all-area status. Caledonia’s Marie Doering and Lauren Rusert were named to the TRC honorable mention team as well.
Senior Alex Varney was named to the TRC all-conference first team for the Warrior boys, averaging 11.5 ppg, 3.9 rebounds per game and 1.8 assists per game for coach Josh Diersen’s team, who posted a 17-11 overall record. Varney was also named to the Winona Daily News all-area second team and the Tribune’s all-are honorable mention squad. Austin Bauer, Kevin Lapham and Kyle Sorenson were all named to the honorable mention team.
Coach Dan Goergen’s young wrestling team has four wrestlers who earned all-conference status. Seniors Viktor Guth (195 lb.) and Luke Werner (126), along with freshman Jacob Winjum (106) and junior Dylan Lee (120) represent Caledonia on the TRC all-conference team.
