The Caledonia/Spring Grove girls golf team made a little noise in their first outing of the season when they beat Fillmore Central by seven strokes at the MaCal Country Club Friday. Led by a 55 from Katie Meyer, the Warriors posted a 224 over nine holes to pick up the win, 224-231.

Despite getting a 48 from Keeley Todd, Fillmore Central wasn’t able to match the Warriors, who got rounds of 56 from both Ashley Gavin and Julianna Sand and a 57 from Claudia Melde to earn the win. Coach Jackie Hauser said, “This was a big first win for us as Fillmore is one of the best teams in the conference. Scores were a little higher than we would like, but that is to be expected with our lack of ability to get out and play.”

Hannah Hendel also carded a round of 57, and Claire Eglinton shot a 60 to round out the scoring for the Warriors.

Despite not having much practice time or even getting out on the course, Hauser said her team hung in there and did the best they could. “With only a few days of practice outside and only one day actually out on the course, the girls hung in there. We struggled with our short games, but that will improve with additional practice outside. At this point we just need to get out and play more holes and better scores will follow. We had six consistent scores on varsity – we just need to get those lowered a few strokes.”

Monday the team was at Decorah, and the junior high team had a meet at home Tuesday. On Thursday they will travel to the Wabasha Invite and will be at Chatfield Friday. Hauser said, “The girls are glad to finally get outside and play golf. It has been a long month hitting into nets inside. They are working hard and trying to make the best of the situation. We will be playing a lot of golf in the next few weeks, and I am excited to see the progress we make.”
