A busy week of competition greeted both the Caledonia/Spring Grove boys and girls golf teams last week. The teams combined to take part in at least eight different varsity meets.

The Warrior ladies played in four meets, three of them on the road, and came home with three wins despite the travel time. On May 6 the team beat Southland at home after Katie Meyer earned medalist honors with a score of 48 to lead the Warriors to a 217-233 win. Claudia Melde carded a 55, and Ashley Gavin scored a 56 over nine holes. Hannah Hendel added a 58 on a great day for golf at Ma Cal. Claire Eglinton shot 59, and Julie Sand scored an even 60 to round out the day for the Warriors.

On May 7 the team traveled to the Harmony Golf Course to take on Fillmore Central and lost by eight shots, 204-212. Meyer again led the Warriors with a round of 49, while Gavin and Hendel shot 54s. Eglinton and Melde shot 55s with Sand carding a 62. Rebeckah Schroeder, playing as an individual, scored a 61 for C/SG, while Fillmore Central’s Katie Tammel earned medalist honors with a 48.

May 9 the team beat Southland 216-240 at the Cedar River Country Club on a cold and rainy day that made the playing tough. Meyer again played well, shooting a 54 to earn medalist honors with Gavin carding a 58 and Melde a 59. Hannah Hendel and Claire Eglinton both shot 61s and Julie Sand scored 63 over nine holes.

Last Friday a trip to the Chatfield course proved successful when the Warriors won by 24 shots, 216-240. This time it was Hendel and Gavin leading the team with identical 51s with Meyer and Eglinton shooting 57 each. Sand (60) and Schroeder (65) rounded out the scoring for the Warriors, while Chatfield’s Paige Isensee shot a 45.

Also on Friday the junior high conference tournament was held at Preston. Katrina Paulson shot her way to a second place finish with a score of 63, and Maria Schieber placed fourth with a score of 74.

“We had a very busy week this week having four meets with three of them being on the road. Our team scores were fairly consistent this week with all of the girls contributing on any given night. We continue to work on our short games and course management in order to save a few strokes each round. Katie Meyer has continued to be consistent for us and was meet medalist twice this week.”

On Monday the team traveled to La Crescent and Thursday they will take part in the conference meet at The Bridges in Winona.

Coach Jeremy Leis and the boys team were also busy with four meets as well. They also hosted Southland at Ma Cal May 6 and picked up an eight shot win, 192-200, with Devin Schiltz scoring a 42 and Cody Breeser adding a 46. Sean Conner and Drew Stemper each shot 52s. Cole Konkel and Simon Ely also played for the Warriors.

On Tuesday the boys hosted Rushford-Peterson but came up short in a 184-174 loss. Schiltz carded a solid 43, and Hunter Rud added a 46. Connor chipped in a 47, but R-P got a 40 from Charlie Krambert and a 41 from Hudson Stensgard to get the win.

May 9 the team went to Adams for a meet with Southland and R-P. Leis took a team made up of entirely all Spring Grove golfers, including Isaac Solum, Reilly Johnson, Zach Sanness, Jacob Lenning, Rodney Tweito and Larry Schulte, and came home with a team score of 218. Sanness shot a 51, Solum added a 53 and Tweito and Schulte each carded rounds of 57.

“It was fun to take that group,” Leis said, “Their attitude was really good – that’s something we always talk about.”

On May 10 they got a nice win over Chatfield 173-201 with Schiltz shooting a 37 and Rud a 43 to lead the Warriors. Stemper (44) and Konkel (49) rounded out the scoring. The team traveled to Fillmore-Central Monday and is then scheduled to host F-C this Friday at 4:30 p.m.

At the boys junior high conference meet Ryan Schroeder placed seventh with a score of 70, and Matt Morrow (82) and Braden Colsch (83) also played.
