Caledonia/Spring Grove tracksters reach new heights
For the second straight year Caledonia’s Emma Lange has placed second at the MSHSL state track and field meet in the high jump.
Lange came up one inch short Saturday, missing the mark at 5’6” to place second behind Warroad senior Deidre Hahn, who cleared 5’6” to win the class A state title.
The second-place effort caps a remarkable career for Lange not only in track and field, but also in volleyball and basketball for the Caledonia Warriors. She placed at least third in the high jump four straight years, winning the title as a sophomore in 2011 and placing second both last year and this year. As a member of the Warrior volleyball team, Lange and her teammates advanced to the Class A state title game against Marshall this past fall and as a junior played on the Warrior basketball team that advanced to the state tournament.
Junior Aly Folz placed 14th in the shot put at 34’02.25’ Saturday in her second trip to state after placing second at the class 1A section meet at Winona.
A pair of C/SG boys took the podium Saturday when Ryan Pitts and West Spier both placed fifth in their respective events. Pitts placed fifth in the boys 100 meter dash with a time of 11.27 seconds after being seeded 12th entering the meet. On Friday Pitts turned in a time of 11.03 seconds to qualify for the finals. The junior also qualified for state in the 200 but failed to advance to the finals. He also ran at the state meet a year ago.
Spier made his second straight trip to state and placed fifth in the boys high jump at 6’5” and, along with four other jumpers, was just one inch off the state winning height of 6’6” by Matt Neururer of Pillager. At the section meet Spier won the section title and also set a new school record of 6’3”, also a personal best until his jump of 6’5” at state.
