He was born in Ridgeway, Minn., on Sept. 22, 1924 to William and Susan (Johnston) Witt. He married Charlette Lloyd in July of 1950 and though they divorced, remained close friends. Bernard was a member of the Gittens Leidel American Legion Post 595 La Crescent and had proudly served his country in the National Guard. For most of his life Bernie was an iron worker and was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.
In addition to Charlette Witt of Hokah, Bernie is survived by five daughters; Carlotta (Mike) Callahan, Mabel, Minn.; Deborah (Russ) Walhus, Decorah, Iowa; Rebecca (Allen) Hunt, Caledonia, Minn.; Kim Witt, Hokah; Bernice (John Penrose) Gastfield, Preston, Minn.; three sons, Lavern (Jackie Lindhorst), Hokah; Lynn Witt, Hokah; Jason (Lori Lloyd) Witt, Waukesha, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one brother Robert (Dorothy) Witt, Colfax, Calif.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Harvey Witt; sisters, Myrtle Smith, Eleanore Frappier, Evelyn O’Neil, Virginia Mrachek, Bernice Witt and Ilene Forschler.
A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Hokah. Rev. Pratap Reddy Salibindla will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Hokah. Friends may call on the family Saturday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
