Ryan Frank threw a complete-game 3-hitter and Caledonia used a five-run fifth to put the Legion team at 3-0 with an 8-0 shutout over Lewiston June 13 at Veterans Park.
After Kai Lidstrom’s near-perfect performance in a 13-0 win at Bangor June 7, Frank returned to the mound for the second time this season and tossed a gem while getting plenty of offensive help. In their three wins so far, Post 191 has outscored their opponents 28-2. Coach Brian Langen’s relatively young squad looks like a seasoned tournament team so far.
“They’re not very old, but I have a lot of faith in these kids,” Langen said after Thursday’s game. “We’ve scored 28 runs in three games so I’m pretty pleased with that.”
Caledonia grabbed a quick 2-0 lead off Lewiston starter Hunter Matzke in the bottom of the second. Seth Twite doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Ryan Frank’s single. Frank then later scored on a passed ball to give Caledonia the lead.
Frank struck out the side in the top of the third, retiring Jacob Matzke, Collin Rain and Hunter Matzke. Post 191 had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third but couldn’t push a run across. Frank gave up a one-out walk to Aaron Hohansee in the top of the fourth but got Ryan Gnadt to ground out and then struck out Collin Neeck to end the Lewiston fourth. Caledonia took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Frank reached on an error and scored when Josh Lampert drew a bases-loaded walk. Caledonia then sealed the win in the bottom of the sixth with a five-run outburst.
With one out Ryan Frank reached on an infield base hit. Justin Burg doubled, and Tanner Gran drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Josh Lampert singled to score Frank, and Tanner Langen laced a double that scored Burg, Gran and Lampert and Langen raced home as Lewiston committed back-to-back errors on the play to clear the bases and give Post 191 an 8-0 lead going into the seventh inning. Frank wrapped up the game getting Neeck to fly out to center field, Sinkikk grounded out to short and Nolan Peterson hit a slow roller back to Frank on the mound to end the game.
With the win Caledonia improved to 3-0 going into Monday’s game at Rushford. On June 19 the team travels to Plainview and on this Thursday the team will host their annual Chicken-Q and dedication ceremony at Veterans Memorial Field with a dedication ceremony at 6:30 p.m. At 4 p.m. Rooster Andy’s will begin serving their famous barbecue chicken, and at 5 p.m. both the 10-and-under and 12-and-under teams will play games on both fields. This will be followed by the dedication ceremony at 6:30 p.m. The festivities wrap up when the Legion alumni team takes on the current squad at 7 p.m.
This year’s ceremony will honor all Caledonia High School athletic volunteers. Also honored this year will be former CHS baseball standout Bob Conway, who will throw out the first pitch June 20.
