Summer food drive starts July 15

The Caledonia Argus is once again partnering with local banks and Semcac Food Shelf to replenish stocks of food for those in our community seeking assistance.

Residents are encouraged to bring food items to Bank of the West, Merchants Bank, Eitzen State Bank in Caledonia and the Caledonia Argus office at 314 West Lincoln Street July 15 through 26.

Of particular need this year is: sugar, cereal, dressings (ranch, mayo), tuna, canned chicken, ramen noodles, crackers (all kinds), pancake mix, juice, coffee, Spam, Spaghettios, jam, mac-n-cheese, vegetable oil, boxed potatoes, Hamburger Helper and ready to eat soups.

Then on Friday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Argus staff will be serving hot turkey sandwiches at Quillin’s. The $4 meal includes a bag of chips, drink and sandwich. Additional sandwiches are $2.

Additionally, for every one pound of food raised, $1 (up to $300) will be contributed by ECM Publishers to the drive.

“Of the 57 newspapers ECM Publishers owns, the Caledonia Argus came in second place in total pounds of food raised for our company-wide summer food drive. This year I want to blow our metropolitan sister newspapers out of the water while helping our friends and neighbors in Houston County. Every ounce of food raised during the Argus food drive stays in Houston County, and we may earn bragging rights for a year,” Emily Bialkowski, Argus managing editor, said.

Last year’s effort raised over 15,600 pounds of food to fight food insecurity in Houston County.
