Local student completing prestigious internship
Peter Selness of Caledonia was selected to participate in the 2013 Interns in Industry internship and scholarship program sponsored by Forward Sioux Falls.
Selness is pursing a degree in chemistry from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. He is nearing completion of a summer internship as a research chemistry intern in POET’s corporate offices in Sioux Falls, S.D. Selness has been using his education and adding to his college learning experience for a corporation that, for more than two decades, has been known as a pioneer and an industry leader in the production of ethanol.
Continuous improvement of production processes at POET’s 20 plants, along with developing and refining the products resulting from those processes, has greatly expanded opportunities for students like Selness who are pursuing chemistry and other science majors.
“Selness is the type of well-rounded student that POET and so many other innovative companies are seeking. He has balanced exceptional academic performance with a variety of on campus and community activities. He returns to Gustavus for his junior year this fall, and we are pleased that he made his way to Sioux Falls to take advantage of this outstanding internship experience for the summer of 2013,” said Mary Medema, Workforce Development director for Forward Sioux Falls.
Interns in Industry is a program designed to create links between Sioux Falls area businesses and students currently studying in area colleges and technical institutes.
“One of our region’s highest priorities is to provide young people with challenging and rewarding careers close to home,” Medema said. “We demonstrate our continued commitment to create outstanding opportunities for these talented soon-to-be graduates.”
