Coach Dustin Moburg and the Caledonia boys soccer team opened up the 2013 season with a pair of games this week, losing to La Crosse Central and Winona Cotter. While it was Caledonia’s first action of the season, Central and Cotter had already played a combined seven games between them. There’s no doubt the early season action helped both teams against Caledonia.

On Tuesday the Warriors hosted a talented Central team and lost 8-1 as the Red Raiders got three goals from Nic Fossum and two more from Reid Crayton.

“It was a tough game with the heat,” Moburg said. “We have to improve on our man marking during set pieces and dead ball situations.”

Caledonia took an early lead on a goal from senior Justin Inglett nine minutes in but it was all Central after that. Nick Strabley made six saves for Caledonia.

On Thursday the Warriors hosted Cotter and played a much better game before falling 3-0 as the Ramblers scored two, second-half goals to get the win. Charlie Gardner and John Grattan combined for 11 saves in the shutout for Cotter.

The Ramblers took a 1-0 lead on a first-half goal by Fang Hyuk and took a 1-0 lead at the break. Cotter’s Patrick Michener scored at the start of the second half, and the Ramblers added another goal for the 3-0 win.

Moburg was, however, pleased with the Warriors’ effort and said, “The team has improved drastically since our last game. The team is working together and communicating very well. We had our chances but couldn’t quite break through the overloaded central defense. I really appreciated the sportsmanship on both sides of the field. We look forward to playing Cotter again in the coming weeks.”

The Warrior junior varsity squad fell 5-0 in their match against Cotter. “JV communication and passing was great,” Moburg said. “Cotter also had a good passing game and 17 shots to our 10.”

Nick Strabley made seven saves in goal for Caledonia, who will play at Saint Charles Sept. 5.
