As the season wears on, opposing head football coaches must be having fits trying to figure out how to attack the Caledonia Warriors.
After a 42-0 blowout win at home over Fillmore Central Friday night, the Warriors, undefeated at 5-0 and ranked #1 in the state in class AA, appear to be in firm control of their own destiny as the 2013 season wears on. Five games into the season, the Warrior offense has outscored their opponents 196-52 while the defense has stiffened, giving up just 16 points in the last 12 quarters.
On Friday, Ryan Pitts was again a key factor when the senior accounted for 200 yards – the second consecutive week Pitts has done that. Against Fillmore Central Pitts rushed for 153 yards, accounted for 28 yards on kickoff returns and also returned an interception 19 yards to reach the 200 yard mark in total all-purpose yards.
Defensively, Caledonia allowed just 90 total yards, 26 rushing and 64 passing in the win. The Warriors jumped out to a 28-0 lead at halftime when they got a 22 yard touchdown pass from Mason DeMorett to Sam Schulte and a three yard run by DeMorett in the first quarter.
In the second stanza Pitts scored from five yards out, and DeMorett hit Adam Buttell with a 25 yard scoring strike for the 28-0 lead. Pitts broke lose on a 75 yard run for the Warriors’ only points of the third quarter, and Hunter Hauser-Caldwell scored on an eight yard run for the 42-0 final. Buttell also led the defense with five tackles with Austin Bauer, Seth Twite and Pitts adding four tackles each. Caledonia also intercepted three Central passes with Bauer, Jacob Winjum and Pitts each getting a pick.
Caledonia will face another tough foe Friday when they travel to Rushford-Peterson to face the Trojans, who suffered their first loss of the season last Friday, 24-7 at Chatfield.
