Wallace Gordon Runningen, age 89, of Mt. Vernon, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 at the Missouri Veterans Home.
Wallace was born on Aug. 3, 1924 in Houston, Minn. to Martin and Alma (Jorde) Runningen. He grew up on the family farm at Ft. Ridgley. Wallace was a dairy, hog and crop farmer until 1959 when he went to work for East Jordon Iron Works. He worked there for 27 years retiring to Springfield, Mo. and then La Crosse, Wis.
Wallace was an avid golfer in his retirement. He was voted “Nicest Guy” by his teammates. He was a good Norwegian who loved lutefisk and lefse.
Wallace is survived by his three children, Lynda (Ken) Evans, Altus, Ark.; Susan Melton, Springfield, Mo. and Dean, Galena, Ill.; six grandchildren, Christine (Jason) Sperry, Penny Evans, Jason Evans, Brad (Chelsea) Melton, John (Kelly) Melton and Heather (Ryan) Finigan; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Melton, Bryson Melton and Evan Sperry; five sisters-in-law, Violet Runningen, Ruth Heintz, Virginia (Eugene) Heintz, Delores Heintz and Lillian Lehman.
Wallace was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (Heintz); his parents; a sister, Cleone Ronnenburg and three brothers, Maynard, Dale and Donald.
The graveside services will be Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. at Prospect Hill Cemetery under the direction of Pastor Lane Zaffke. A luncheon will follow at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston.
