The 20th Anniversary concert season for the Winona Brass Band opens on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. The band is comprised of 25 brass players and two percussionists from Winona and the surrounding area, including Wisconsin and Iowa.

Under the direction of Richard Lindner, the Winona Brass Band continues to delight audiences with its variety of music programming, impressive technical flourishes and vibrant musicality.

All concerts are held at St. Cecilia Theater on the Winona Cotter campus. The entrance is at the grand staircase on 7th Street.  Concerts are supported by a free-will offering.

Performance dates include Nov. 17 at 2 p.m., Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. and May 11, 2014, at 2 p.m.

The May 11 concert will feature the premier of a new original work by local composer Eric Heukeshoven in honor of the 20th anniversary of the band.

For the Nov. 17 concert, director Richard Lindner has selected Malcolm Arnold’s “Little Suite for Brass” as the opening number.  Also programmed is an interesting “March Fantasia Colonel Bogey on Parade.”  This march is known and recognized by many as the theme music for the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” staring Willam Holden and Alec Guinness. And yes, you may whistle along.

The program will also include two lovely songs set for brass band – Leonard Bernstein’s “A Simple Song,” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns.”

You may recognize a local face in the band. Dustin Moburg has played with the Winona Brass Band for 14 years.  He is a music educator for the Caledonia School District.

He has played trombone with the Winona Steam Calliope band and Fillet of Soul. He currently plays trombone for Studebaker 7 and plays euphonium for the Winona Municipal Band. He enjoys the variety of literature and styles in British brass band music that feature the euphonium and the technical prowess of instruments that do not always get the spotlight – like the euphoniums, baritones and tubas.

The Winona Brass Band invites you to come to our concert to join in the 20th anniversary celebration.  Like us on Facebook for information on upcoming concerts.
