Clara Headington

Headington_webClara Headington, age 95, of Mabel, Minn., died Sunday morning, November 10, 2013 at The Meadows in Mabel.

Clara Ida Christine (Schuttemeier) Headington was born March 23, 1918 at home in Union Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Caroline (Meyer) Schuttemeier. She grew up living on a farm with five brothers and told many interesting stories of helping with farm work. She attended rural country school through the 8th grade.

Clara was united in marriage to Elmer Guy Headington on June 3, 1943 at the St. Luke’s Church in Eitzen, Minn. This union was blessed with eight children:  Lois, Merle, Phyllis, Wayne, Lyle, Janice, Lila and Joyce. Clara worked at the Control Data factory in Spring Grove for a few years, but it was not long before she left that job to continue being a full time homemaker.  She could usually be found in the kitchen and was very well known for her “great” baking skills. You never left her home with an empty stomach!

In 1970 Clara and Guy moved from their rural farm near New Albin back to the Burr Oak area.  She was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church and “very” active in the Eunice  Circle. Clara was very fond to make great donations (doughnuts, doilies, or embroidered dish towels, pies, etc.) to the annual Church bazaar and took pride to tell many of how “ONE” dozen of her doughnuts sold for around $200!

After Guy passed away, she went to work in the North Winneshiek School food service. There are many stories to be told from the several grandchildren on the “joy” to see Grandma serving up their lunches. She always had a smile for those many school children.

The love of Clara’s life was her family and friends. She shared many of her homemade “treasures” with everyone, and WHAT a treat to get something made by Mom/Grandma. Her knit afghans, embroidered dish towels, pillows, doilies, etc., can be found in many of our family homes. She was and always will be remembered as one “special” lady! Clara moved to The Meadows in Mabel, Minn. in 2005.

Clara died Sunday morning, Nov. 10, 2013 at The Meadows at age 95.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Guy on June 15, 1975; two sons, Wayne on November 10, 2001 and Lyle on December 16, 2001; a son-in-law, Mark Numedahl on November 6, 2005; a granddaughter, Diana Headington on November 6, 1995; four brothers: Armin (Esther), Walter (Helen), William (Arlene) and Elmer Schuttemeier; her sister, Edna Schuttemeier; and sisters-in-law Evelyn Schuttemeier, Myrtle (Walter) Pfister and Frances (Wayne) Brandt.
