Lawrence “Shorty” Bauer
Shorty was born in Caledonia on May 18, 1933 to Gerhard and Helen (Reining) Bauer. He was the sixth child of 12 children. On Nov. 14, 1955, he married the love of his life, Leota Mae Lee, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Caledonia.
Among his interests and activities, Shorty played softball, was a boxer in the Golden Gloves Boxing Association; he loved to hunt and fish, playing cards, reading, dancing and singing songs around the piano with friends and family.
Shorty and Leota raised a family working various farms in the Houston County area until they purchased a farm in Blackhammer, Minn., where they farmed from 1968 until 1997. His passions and interests were conservation and land stewardship along with family activities in 4H. He was on the board of the Root River Soil and water Conservation for 11 years as well as Wildlife management programs. After he retired from farming, he and Leota purchased a home in Caledonia. He made a living while driving semi truck which kept him involved in the farming community for several years.
He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic church in Caledonia throughout his life.
In addition to his wife Leota, he is survived by six children; Chris Bauer, Paul (Julie) Bauer, Tod (Sara) Bauer, Glen (Lynda) Bauer, Peggy Bauer and Patti (Todd) Olerud. Since he did survive his angelic children, he and Leota were blessed with nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren with another on the way. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Sr. Vinciana Bauer, Bernice Lange, Vina Lange, Rita (Lee) Svehaug, Gordy (Wanda) Bauer, John (Judy) Bauer, Mary Mullen, Millie (Art) Roback and Helen (Dave) Augedahl.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Bauer; his parents; a sister, Teresa Heberlein and brother, Vince Bauer.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Matt Fasnacht will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday at Holy Family Hall, next to the church, with a prayer service at 7:30 pm. Viewing will also be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the hall.
