Ole Haugstad

Ole Haugstad_webOle (Obert) H. Haugstad, Jr., 78, of Caledonia, Minn., died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, three months after being diagnosed with cancer.

He was born in La Crosse, Wis. on May 4, 1935 to Obert H. Haugstad, Sr. and Eunice “Mae” Smith. He attended Caledonia schools through his sophomore year and graduated from Logan High in La Crosse in 1953. He then joined the Army in June 1954 where he served 32 months in Japan and was honorably discharged in November, 1957. In 1958, he met Judy Graf and it was love at first sight. They were married on July 11, 1959 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in La Crosse, and were married 54 years.

He attended Molar Barber College in Minneapolis, Minn. where he received his barber license in 1959. He retired due to illness in August, 2013 after 54 years. As a small hometown barber, he made many friends over the years. For over 20 of these years, he and Judy also had a hobby farm where they raised their five children. They moved to town in 1986 where his yard, flowers and fish pond became his new hobbies. He enjoyed sharing the love of his flowers with his grandchildren and a special treat was being able to feed his fish. Over the years, they enjoyed many family vacations and trips to Hawaii. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and American Legion Post 191.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; five children, David (Audrey) Haugstad, Caledonia; Diane (Jerry) Olson, Preston, Minn.; Debbie Outland, Las Vegas, Nev.; Jeff (Mary Jo) Haugstad, Rothchild, Wis.; and Sue (Mike) Stemper, Caledonia. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Mandy, Travis and Cody Haugstad; Teri and Daniel (Jenna) Root, and Ashley Olson; Adam (Sophia) Crowson; Samantha, Jacob and Katie Haugstad; and Cara, Justin, Brooke and Amber Stemper. Great-grandchildren are Haven, Aalyiah, Teahya, Tatum and Tannen. He is survived by four siblings, Sandra Guillaume, Edina, Minn.; Elizabeth Wintheiser, Stillwater, Minn.; Wanda (Gordy) Bauer, Caledonia; and Rick Haugstad, Minnesota, and special sister-in-law Darlyne Hoscheit, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal and paternal grandparents, mother and father-in-law Joe and Mille Graf, brother-in-law Richard Guillaume, special brother-in-law and friend Norman Hoscheit, and niece, Dawn Guillaume.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Holy Family Hall next to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia, with a prayer service at 7:30. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s, with Fr. Matt Fasnacht officiating and with visitation one hour before the service. A military burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Caledonia following the service.
