The Caledonia boys basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a loud bang and hammered Fillmore-Central 95-68 in the season opener.
Caledonia had four players score in double-figures, led by eighth grader Owen King and sophomore forward Gavin Schroeder, who led the Warriors with 19 points each. Junior Austin Bauer added 18, and sophomore Colton Lampert added 16 points as the Warriors hit 14, three-pointers in the game.
Caledonia used a big first half run and jumped out to a 61-34 lead at the break. King hit five treys in the game that accounted for 15 of his 19 points, and Bauer hit four from beyond the arc. Head coach Josh Diersen said, “The kids had great energy and we took good shots; our shot selection was very good.”
Caledonia shot 40 percent from three-point land, going 14-35, with 11 of them coming in the first half. King and Bauer combined for eight threes alone.
Diersen was quick to compliment the bench, saying the Warriors got 52 points from there. “We play at a pretty fast pace and these kids trust each other. It’s nice to have guys come off the bench that can contribute. We actually extended the lead when they were on the floor, but our defense has got to get better.”
Caledonia traveled to Rushford-Peterson Tuesday night and will be at Kingsland Thursday. The Warriors home-opener will be Dec. 10 against Southland at the elementary school gym.
