Gymnasts win big at La Crescent

Led by a clean sweep in all four events, the Caledonia/Houston/Mabel/Spring Grove gymnastics team got off to a roaring start Dec. 3 when they rolled past La Crescent 123.875-107.675 at La Crescent.
The Warriors took the top two places in each event and finished 1-2-3-4 in the all-around for coach Jackie Johnson, who looks to take advantage of a roster that has 28 athletes, including all but one varsity member from a year ago.
The Warriors got solid all-around efforts from Sierra Hunter, Kaylee Cavanaugh, Tara Solberg and Abby Hoskins with Hunter winning the balance beam (8.0), placing second on the floor exercise (7.9), the bars (7.925) and on the vault (7.925) to claim the all-around with a score of 32.175 points.
Cavanaugh, back from a season-ending ankle injury a year ago, finished second in the all-around, scoring an 8.2 on the vault, 8.2 on the bars, 6.85 on the beam and 8.35 on the floor, winning that event.
Johnson said, “The girls did a great job for our first meet of the season. I was hoping for varsity to hit 118 points, and they did above and beyond scoring a 123.875.”
Solberg placed third in the all-around, winning the vault with an 8.4, taking fifth on the floor (7.075), fourth on the bars (7.325) and seventh on the beam (6.6). Abby Hoskins placed third on the vault (8.2), ninth on the beam (6.15) sixth on the floor (6.8) and a ninth place effort on the beam (6.15).
Emily Hahn turned in a second place effort on the balance beam, scoring a 7.5, and Jessilyn Knutson carded a score of 7.25 to place fourth overall in the floor exercise and also placed ninth on the uneven bars with a score of 3.975.
Kerrigan Scanlan won the all-around in the junior varsity match with a total score of 20.35. Johnson said, “The goal for the JV was to have a team total of 80 and they scored a team total of 94.4. Over all, for a early season meet, I am very happy with the results of the meet.”
On Saturday the team traveled to the Byron Tournament. On Dec. 13 the team heads to Pine Island before hosting Byron.
