Straight off the tailwind of serving a record 422 appreciative guests for Thanksgiving, Elsie’s Bar & Grill is back at it, preparing a Christmas dinner for those who don’t have dinner plans, don’t feel like cooking, don’t know anybody or don’t otherwise have the means to enjoy a good meal on Christmas Day.
This is the sixth time restaurant owner Elsie Babler has opened her establishment for Christmas dinner where nothing more than a donation is taken up to help support the cause.
“I truly believe that no one needs to be alone on the holidays. I would never want to see anyone alone because it’s a day of family and friends,” Babler said.
The undertaking is made less insurmountable by volunteers, donations and home-prepared pastry treats. The traditional meal includes all the holiday favorites, like turkey, ham, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetable, rolls, dessert and a beverage. Even more appetizing than the menu is the friendly atmosphere.
“It’s very enjoyable for everybody,” Babler said.
As in years past, the extended Bauer family has volunteered to help serve, but cash donations and desserts are still needed.
This year’s community Christmas meal is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25, at Elsie’s Bar & Grill, 226 E. Main St., Caledonia. Those who need a ride or wish for delivery need to call 507-725-3313 on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24. Those with a party of six or greater are asked to make a reservation on Dec. 24, as well.
If you do stop by for a bite, be sure to congratulate Elsie and Lee, who tied the knot Dec. 7 in the basket of a hot air balloon during the Bluff and Valley Balloon Rally.
