Lowell was born Sept. 12, 1926 in Caledonia to Chester and Olga (Louve) Nelson. He attended Fort Ridgely country school through the eighth grade. He graduated from Houston High School in 1944. Lowell attended the University of Minnesota and played trombone in the marching band. There, he met the love of his life, Grace Bienhoff and they were married in St. Paul on Oct. 13, 1951. Lowell was involved in farming his entire life and also owned and operated Nelson Feed Store from 1953-1976. He was very musical and loved to sing. He was the choir director at Houston Baptist Church for many years and was very active in the church. Lowell was also on the Houston School Board. Faith and family were very important to Lowell; he loved every minute spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed living independently on the farm and taking care of the animals, and feeding the birds.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Grace; three children, Daniel (Nancy), Hugo, Minn.; Dallas (Karla), Houston and Deborah (Jim) Paulson, Hutchinson, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Jessica (Brian) Moore, Karl (Anna) Nelson, Julie (Chris) Lilley, Nathan (Niki) Nelson, Marc Nelson, Lynn Nelson, Rebecca Paulson and Ben (Emily) Paulson; and four great-grandchildren, Lucas, Nolan, Eliana and Samuel.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Opal Charlene Nelson.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at Houston Baptist Church with the Reverend Don Range officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church and one hour prior to the service at the church. Lowell will be laid to rest in the Swede Bottom Cemetery in the spring.
