Freshman Mariah Schroeder poured in 22 points to lead the Caledonia girls to a 71-52 win over Spring Grove Dec. 26 as the Warriors won the first game of their holiday tournament in a big way. Schroeder scored 15 points in the first half as Caledonia opened up a 46-23 lead at the break and rolled to their second win of the season. After the Lions took an early 13-10 lead, Caledonia went on a 36-10 run the rest of the first half and took control of the game. Leading 18-13, the Warriors created numerous turnovers and scored easy baskets. Tracy Felten hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 28-19 and a steal and layup from Schroeder gave Caledonia a 32-19 cushion with a little over five minutes to play in the first half. “Mariah played an all around great game, and I thought Tracy Felten played her best game this year with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals,” coach Kevin Klug said.

Caledonia hit three 3-pointers in the second half with Jordyn Krause making two and Sierra Olinger getting the other one. Krause finished the game with 11 points and Sam Schroeder tossed in an even dozen in the win. “We hit nine threes. They were taking our drive away, so we did a nice job finding the open shooters,” Klug said. “We did a nice job in our trap and got 18 steals and forced many other turnovers.”

Caledonia then lost to La Crescent Dec. 28, 56-43 as Katie Waller scored 20 points to lead the Lancers. “They have a great player in Waller and we need to do better taking those great players away,” Klug said. “We let her get open way too often. We also got out-hustled in this one. We’re not always going to have the best player on the court or the tallest, but I always expect us to out-hustle and out-work the other team and get wins.

Mariah Schroeder again led the Warriors with 11 points and Brenna Werner added 10 for Caledonia, who will travel to P-E-M Thursday night.
