Winjum 4th at Bi-State, Warriors place 4th in Division 2

Led by six top 10 finishes, the Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove wrestling team placed fourth in division two and sixth overall in the 55-team Bi-State Classic at the La Crosse Center over the weekend.

Sophomore Jacob Winjum placed fourth at 120 pounds to lead the Warriors. Winjum started the tournament 4-0 before losing to La Crosse Central senior Ben Thornton in the semifinals 12-3. Thornton would go on to win the 120 pound title and claim his fourth Bi-State championship and currently holds a 168-2 record in four years of high school wrestling.

At 106 pounds Kyle Cavanaugh placed eighth with a 4-3 record over two days. Cavanaugh lost to Chris Ruf of Mauston in the seventh place match. Hunter Hauser-Caldwell turned in a seventh place effort at 126 pounds, beating Jake Obert of La Crosse Central 15-2 in the seventh place match, avenging an earlier, 10-6 loss to Obert in the third round.

Dylan Lee placed eighth at 132 pounds, finishing with a 4-3 record including wins over Brandon Holmes of Two Rivers, John Maki of Mauston and Elijah Alt of River Valley. At 138 Drew Stemper wrestled eight matches and placed 10th.

Blake Mauss, wrestling at 220 pounds, placed ninth overall getting wins over Cole Handschke of Athens, Chase Jolly of Middleton, Nick Juberian of Bloomington Kennedy and Hudson Greenwood of Baraboo.

Other Warrior wrestlers included Justin Stemper, who placed 11th at 113 pounds; Sam Stemper at 145; Mitchell Schmitz at 160 pounds; Eli Craig at 170; Alex Goergen, who placed 12th overall at 182 pounds; and Case McCormick at 195 pounds.

The Warriors will travel to the FC/L/MC Triangular Friday and will host St. Charles Jan. 9
