Grapplers grind through four matches in two days

The Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove wrestling squad got in some serious mat time when they wrestled four times in two days, traveling to Fillmore Central Jan. 3 and then taking part in the Owatonna Federated Duals Jan. 4.

The Warriors took care of the Falcons Jan. 3 and cruised to a 44-25 win. The team got forfeits at 106, 113 and 120 pounds to start the match, and Jacob Winjum continued his impressive season by pinning Korby Koch at the 3:03 mark to give Caledonia a 24-0 lead.

At 132 Hunter Hauser-Caldwell won by a technical fall 16-0 over Alex Fishbaugher, and Dylan Lee followed with a pin of Gabe Decker at 138 to push the lead to 35-0.

The Falcons got on the board at 145 when Andy Love beat Drew Stemper 4-2 and Fillmore’s Connor Hanson followed with a 13-3 major decision win over Blaine Knutson at 152 pounds. Mitchell Schmitz won 6-5 over Trevor Barnes at 160, but the Falcons then won the next four matches to close the gap to 38-25. Then, Blake Mauss pinned Jacon Thomas to seal the win for the Warriors at heavyweight.

The next day the team finished 1-3 at the always-tough Federated Duals at Owatonna, beating WEM/JWP 45-27 and losing to Owatonna 51-22, Coon Rapids 33-27 and Holmen, Wis., 33-32.

The busy schedule improved the Warriors dual meet record to 4-3 overall, and assistant coach Roger Holland said the team wrestled pretty well against some stiff competition in the process. “The Federated Duals have some very good teams and some state ranked individuals there. Holmen is ranked #5 as a team in Wisconsin Division 1 large schools, and they beat us by one point. Owatonna is ranked #5 in Minnesota AAA large schools.  Our wrestlers went out to compete with whoever was there regardless of ranking, and they did very well. The coaching staff is looking forward to making the small improvements needed for the wrestlers to achieve their goals at the end of the season.”

Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove will host St. Charles Thursday night and then head to the Stewartville Invitational Jan. 11.
