Gymnasts vault to fourth at Holmen

Tara Solberg and Sierra Hunter both placed in the top 10 to lead the Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove gymnastics team to a fourth place finish in the Div. 1 bracket at the McLellan Invitational at Holmen Saturday.

The Warriors finished with 123.900 total team points with Solberg placing ninth and Hunter 10th for the team in the overall competition. Solberg placed eighth in the vault with a score of 8.45 with Abby Hoskins adding a score of 8.3 to finish in 11th place. Kaylee Cavanaugh was 17th and Hunter placed 26th in the event, which was won by La Crosse’s Kaitlyn Hicks with a score of 8.950.

On the balance beam, Solberg placed a solid sixth with a mark of 8.00 and Cavanaugh placed 21st with Emily Hahn placing 23rd, Hunter 24th and Hoskins 33rd in the event. Cavanaugh was 15th on the uneven bars with a total score of 7.750; Solberg scored 7.50; and Hoskins a 7.2 in the event with Jessilyn Knutson scoring a 6.60.

Hunter placed ninth on the floor exercise, scoring an 8.325 with Solberg tying for 12th place at 8.10 and Knutson finishing 27th place. Hoskins was 30th for the Warriors.

The host Holmen Vikings won the event with a team score of 133.150, followed by Onalaska and La Crosse. The Warriors were fourth with Reedsburg, Wis., 5th, followed by West Salem and Tomah.

On Jan. 14 the Warriors hosted La Crescent and pulled out a dual meet win, 124.700 – 120.850. Kaylee Cavanaugh won the all-around with a score of 33.500 with Hunter third (31.050), Solberg fourth (30.300) and Hoskins fifth at 28.750.

Cavanaugh won three events: the bars at 7.900, the beam with a score of 8.700 and the floor exercise where she stuck a score of 8.600. La Crescent’s Jordan Peterson was second in the all-around, scoring a 31.350.

Up next for the Warriors will be a meet at Byron Jan. 23 followed by a home meet Jan. 28 against Pine Island (rescheduled from Jan. 16) and the regular season finale Jan. 30 when they host Stewartville.
