Warriors get #1 seed, host Lewiston-Altura Thursday

With a 23-2 overall record, the Caledonia Warriors are the #1 seed in the Section 1AA East bracket and will open up tournament play by hosting #8 seeded Lewiston-Altura Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The good news came after the Warriors finished the regular season with a pair of wins and their first loss since Dec. 3 to Plainview-Elgin-Millville – the #2 seed in the tournament – 74-57 loss at Plainview Feb. 11.

The Bulldogs, 20-6 overall, led 33-28 at halftime and then out-scored the Warriors 41-29 in the second half handing the Warriors just their second loss of the season. “We just didn’t shoot well,” coach Josh Diersen said, “And they killed us on the offensive boards.”

Nick Shanks led all scorers with 24 points for the Bulldogs, and Schuyler Thompson added 17 more as P-E-M jumped out to an early 10-2 lead. Kyle Sorenson led Caledonia with 14 points, and West Spier chipped in an even dozen in the loss.

Caledonia bounced back with a 75-62 win at Cotter Feb. 13 with Sorenson leading the charge with 23 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. On Feb. 14 the Warriors won their 23rd game of the season with a 92-79 win at Wabasha-Kellogg as Caledonia had three players score at least 20 points in the game. Kyle Sorenson and Colton Lampert led with 22 points each, and Josh Nord added 20 more.

Diersen said, “Three players scoring 20 – that doesn’t happen very often.” Lampert made 13 of 13 free throws in the game and Sorenson added 14 rebounds in the win.

Looking ahead, the Warriors will take on a L-A team that they have beat by a combined score of 165-65 in a pair of wins this season. A win then sends Caledonia to the Mayo Civic Center Feb. 25 where they would play either #4 seed Lake City or #5 seed St. Charles at 6 p.m.

Chatfield is the #3 seed with La Crescent seeded sixth and Cotter #7. The #1 seed for the Warriors marks the first time since the 2004-05 season that Caledonia has been given the top spot.

The Warriors game Feb. 15 at Southland was postponed and has been subsequently canceled.
