Wrestlers look to individual tournament

The Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove wrestlers started the tournament trail at the section one team duals at Cannon Falls Feb. 13 and came home with a 1-1 record.

The Warriors opened up with a 62-13 thrashing of La Crescent in their opening meet but then fell to Cannon Falls in the semi-finals 42-19 to end their day. Against the Lancers, Caledonia won the first six matches, including forfeits at 106 and 113 pounds, pins from Jacob Winjum and Hunter Hauser-Caldwell and major decision wins from Tylor Nelson and Dylan Lee to go up 32-0.

The Warriors also got forfeits at 170, 182, 220 and 285 pounds with Case McCormick pinning Tom Weiser at the 5:19 mark in their match at 195 pounds.

The Warriors then fell to the host Bombers as Cannon Falls won nine of 14 matches. “We handled La Crescent pretty well,” coach Dan Goergen said, “But we didn’t have a few guys come through for us against Cannon Falls – they wrestled very well.”

Caledonia got wins from Kyle Cavanaugh at 106, Dylan Lee at 138, Drew Stemper at 145 pounds, Alex Goergen at 195 and Blake Mauss at 285.

The Warriors finish the dual meet season with a 13-6 record and now turn their attention to the 1AA individual tournament this weekend at the Mayo Civic Center with action beginning Friday. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and first-round action is scheduled for approximately 12:30 p.m.

“I think the team is peaking at the right time,” Goergen said. “We are wrestling pretty well, and I think we could get five through to state if we keep it up. If not, we might struggle. It’s in their hands now.”
