Blake Mauss and Austin Goergen will represent the Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove wrestling team at the state meet this weekend in St. Paul.
Goergen won the section 1AA championship at 182 pounds, while Mauss placed second at 285. Both wrestlers are making their first trip to the state meet.
Goergen (17-3) will wrestle Quad County sophomore Hayden Johnson (27-14) in his first match sometime after 11 a.m. Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, and (Mauss 33-5) will wrestle senior Jake Lehmann (38-4) of Dawson Boyd-LacQuiParle Montevideo United in his first match, also sometime after 11 a.m.
Goergen, just a freshman, rolled through the bracket at 182 pounds in Rochester, winning all three matches after getting his first-round bye. Goergen beat Andrew Knapezck of Lewiston-Altura 7-2 in the second round and then pinned Tim Christianson (29-12) of Albert Lea to get to the finals, where he beat Brian Bertram of Byron 6-4 to win the title.
Mauss, a sophomore, lost to undefeated (38-0) Sam Stoll of Kasson-Mantorville in the championship match at 285 pounds. Mauss then beat William Mendez of Albert Lea 7-4 for true second place. Mauss also received a first-round bye and then beat Cale Stensgard of L-A by pin, sending him into the finals against Stoll.
The Warriors’ Justin Stemper placed fourth at 106 pounds, Jacob Winjum was fourth at 120, Hunter Hauser-Caldwell was also fourth at 126 pounds. At 132 Dylan Lee placed fifth, Mitchell Schmitz placed fifth at 160 pounds and Eli Craig was fifth at 170 pounds.
The class AA championship matches are slated to begin Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m.
