Marge Dehning

MargeDehning_webMargery “Marge” J. Dehning, age 75, of Waukon, Iowa, died Friday, March 7, 2014, at her home in Waukon.

Margery Jean Dehning was born Jan. 29, 1939, in Waukon, the daughter of Clarence Theodore and Helen Charlotte (Amondson) Flage. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School. She met Donald Dehning at Matter’s Ballroom in Decorah, Iowa, and the two later married on March 20, 1960, at Zion United Church of Christ. The couple made their home on their Dorchester, Iowa farm until moving into Waukon in 1990. Marge was the secretary for the Allamakee County Relief Office for 16 years and was the director for two years. She also helped Don with the farm work, tending to the chickens, mowing and gardening. Marge later worked for the Allamakee County Veterans Affairs Office for 18 years, retiring in 2004.

Marge was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen, Minn. and was very active in Ladies Aid; she also served as the secretary for three years. Before getting married, she had been a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. Marge was a very festive lady, always decorating for every holiday and sending out holiday cards. She enjoyed music and dancing and watching TV (especially when Elvis Presley was on). She loved all animals, especially cats, and collected many animal figurines and knick-knacks. Mostly, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and spoiling the dogs.

Marge is survived by Don, her husband of nearly 54 years, of Waukon; her two children, Vicki (Brett) Froslee, Andover, Minn.; and Jeff Dehning, Holmen, Wis.; five grandchildren, Cristian, Mya, and Neleh Dehning; and Alex and Jack Froslee; sister, Marilyn Winter, Waukon; two brothers-in-law, Lloyd Dehning, Waukon; and Merlin (Lois) Dehning, Caledonia, Minn.; and five sisters-in-law: Lila (Hillery) Kasten, Eitzen; Lorraine Peter, Caledonia; Janice (Gene) Tessmer, Caledonia; Letha Fall, Bussey, Iowa; and Carol Plank, Lake City, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen with Pastor Keith Selberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Honorary casketbearers are her grandchildren, Mya and Neleh Dehning and Alex and Jack Froslee. Casketbearers are Cristian Dehning, Dean Dehning, Richard Kasten, Cody Meyer, Tom Peter and David Tessmer.
