Military Ball is April 12 in Spring Grove

By Jan Lee Buxengard

The tenth annual Military Ball is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at the Fest Building in Spring Grove. Events of the evening include dinner, ceremony, entertainment, displays, photo portraits and more.

Hosted under the umbrella of the Houston County Council of the American Legion, a non-profit organization that has membership from each of the five Legion Posts in the county, the event honors all military personnel who have served our country, past and current, and from every aspect of the military. This year’s event will honor military support services – family, friends and support organizations.

The invitation is extended to all military service members and veterans, as well as spouses, families and any others who support those who serve. In past years, attendance has encompassed the area of southeastern Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and across the Mississippi to Wisconsin and several came from even farther away.

Guest speaker will be Col. Edward Fontes of Cresco, Iowa. He is retired after serving with the National Guard, Army and Reserves. He was in Korea with the 40th Division, and also in Viet Nam with the 6th Army and was a liaison officer for President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The Cheers Swingin’ Big Band, from La Crosse will be returning by popular demand. The nine-piece group of teachers and music teachers performs music including a variety of swing, jump (jive) swing, Latin, Polkas, waltzes, fox trots, rock and roll and lush ballads.

Attire for the military ball is Sunday best, semi-formal, or formal, with many wearing the uniform of their military or veteran’s organization. Organizers request no casual street clothes.

Cost for the evening is $27 per person, which includes one photo. The dinner plate includes pork and chicken.

Cocktails and photos begin at 4:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5:45 p.m. Following the program, dancing will be from 8 to 11:30 p.m.

Invitations have been sent in the mail to those who attended the ball in past years and others who had already signed up.
