Mary Jeanne McCarthy

MaryJeanneMcCarthy_now_webMaryJeanneMcCarthy_then_webMary “Jeanne” McCarthy, 87, of Caledonia, passed away peacefully, Monday, March 10, 2014, at Caledonia Care and Rehab, Caledonia.

She was born Aug. 15, 1926, in Waukon, Iowa, to William and Emma (Miller) Haas. Mary Jeanne graduated from Waukon High School and St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn. She married Charles McCarthy Feb. 2, 1948 in Rochester. Charles preceded her in death Jan. 10, 2000.

Mary Jeanne moved to Caledonia in 1948 and she worked at the Caledonia Hospital. She was active in the nursing profession for many years as a staff RN and later as Director of Nursing at the Caledonia Health Care Center. She believed that caregiving is a vocation and was proud to have been part of Caledonia’s healthcare institutions and to have worked with their staff. She retired in 1989. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women, the VFW Auxiliary and as a American Red Cross volunteer. She was instrumental in organizing and establishing a section on “mental health care” information in the Caledonia library.

Mary Jeanne was an avid gardener of both flowers and vegetables.  She enjoyed the outdoors including picnics, camping, hunting and fishing. She believed that every age is a good age.

She is survived by two sons, William, Caledonia; and Michael, Stillwater, Minn.; two grandsons, Patrick and Daniel of Stillwater; a great-grandson, Nicholas, Rochester; sisters-in-law, Frances Haas, Gold River, Calif.; Stella Urbain; Caledonia; and Lou Kerndt, Omaha, Neb.; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ron Haas; sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Milton Mellick, Ed Urbain, Holly Mae McCarthy, and a nephew, Martin Urbain.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 15, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Matt Fasnacht will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church Sat.
