Lloyd Herman Dehning was born on Feb. 15, 1925 in Dorchester, the son of George and Emma (Kumpf) Dehning. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen, Minn. Lloyd attended country school and Caledonia High School through 9th grade. He then began farming with his parents on the family farm near Dorchester.
Lloyd met Delores Weber at the Waukon Opera House and on July 16, 1953 they were married at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen. Lloyd was a dedicated husband and adored his wife for all of their 60 years together. Lloyd and Delores made their home on Delores’ family farm with Delores’ parents. Lloyd was always the loving caregiver and took good care of Delores and her parents. They were blessed with one daughter, Gail, in 1960.
Lloyd and Delores farmed together on the same farm all of their life raising dairy cows, hogs, chickens and beef cows. Lloyd loved farming and was a true caretaker of the land and his animals. He continued to farm into his 80s and loved to help his son-in-law, Dave Prestemon, put in the crops and take them out in the fall. He had a tremendous knowledge of farming and was a great asset to the farming operation.
Lloyd was a huge sports fan. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and Waukon Indians. He enjoyed attending Waukon Indian games of all kinds. He loved watching Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball games on TV. He also attended a few Iowa Hawkeye football games when they played Iowa State and enjoyed that very much. He also loved watching baseball games on TV. Lloyd was a devoted father and grandfather. He loved following all of the activities of his grandchildren and never missed an activity no matter what it was.
In later years, Lloyd and Delores moved to Waukon to Evergreen Court Apartments and later to the Good Samaritan Center. Lloyd loved people and enjoyed making new friends at the apartment.
