Robert M. “Bob” Zimmerman, 85, of Caledonia, Minn., passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.
He was born in Grafton, N.D., on Aug. 28, 1928, to Milton and Katherine (Sprague) Zimmerman. Robert graduated from high school in Wahpeton, N.D., and then graduated from college at University of Denver. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Denver – Business School.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey for two years.
Bob came to Caledonia after his schooling and started work at Sprague National Bank.
He met his wife, Dagny Sivertson, and they were married on Jan. 7, 1956, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Together they raised four giant redwoods, as Dagny’s brother used to say, Mark, David, John and Paul. Dagny preceded Bob in death on May 6, 1995.
He spent his entire working career at the Sprague National Bank until his retirement. After retirement, Bob spent time being a fiduciary and estate planner. He was a member of the Caledonia Lions Club, the Masonic Lodgeand the Caledonia Chamber of Commerce. Bob had a passion for playing tennis and had an even bigger passion for watching his family play tennis or watching the tournaments on TV. He also had a great love for music. Bob was a lifetime member of the Caledonia United Methodist Church Choir and was a member of various singing groups, one of which was the group called “Celebration,” which was a very close group of friends that all shared the same passion for music as Bob did. He greatly enjoyed playing the piano as well.
Survivors include his four sons, Mark, La Crosse; David, Fullerton, Calif.; John (Mary), Savage, Minn.; and Paul, Loveland, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Kiersten, 17; and Anders, 13.
In addition to his wife, Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jane, who died at the age of eight due to scarlet fever.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Caledonia United Methodist Church, 308 N. Kingston St. Rev. Mark Bengtson will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. A visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Caledonia United Methodist Church.
