Juniors Austin Bauer and Kyle Sorenson of Caledonia High School have been named to the Class AA Boys Basketball All-Tournament Team.
The awards recognize student athletes who demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship, team commitment, athletic ability and leadership during the state high school tournaments. Athletes are selected to the Wells Fargo All-Tournament Team by a panel of coaches attending the tournament. Boys basketball provides 10 awards for this class of competition.
Both Bauer and Sorenson were named to the squad after the Warriors beat Fairmont 79-65 to win the third place game at the Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia University.
Caledonia compiled a 29-3 overall record under head coach Josh Diersen this season and re-wrote the record books in several categories along the way.
The 6’7” Sorenson led Caledonia in scoring this season, averaging 13.9 points per game, while Bauer averaged 11.9 ppg. Sorenson also led the Warriors in rebounding with 269, including 104 offensive rebounds and 165 defensive boards. He also blocked 62 shots, an average of 1.9 blocks per game.
Sorenson scored over 20 points in a game seven times this season, including 25 against Rushford-Peterson Dec. 3 and 24 in the AA semi-final loss to Annandale March 14.
Bauer averaged 16.7 points per game in Caledonia’s tournament run, including a 28 point effort against St. Paul Academy and Summit School where he hit seven 3-pointers. For the season, Bauer finished with 381 points, shooting 44 percent from the floor on 3-points attempts and also led the team in assists with 132. Bauer scored 20 points or more four times during the season.
Joining Bauer and Sorenson on the squad are Mitch Pfingsten and Josh Eversman, of Fairmont, Chase Knickerbocker, Matt Miller and Andrew Fort, of Annandale, and Casey Staniger, Kory Deadrick and Marc Peterson, of Esko.
Bauer, Sorenson and Josh Nord were also named to the TRC all-conference first team. Nord, one of just two seniors on the team, averaged 10.5 points per game and set a new Caledonia school record with 69 made 3-pointers. Colton Lampert and West Spier, the other senior on the team, were named to the all-conference honorable mention squad. Lampert averaged 12.2 points per game and led the team in steals with 74. Spier averaged 11.25 ppg and was second on the team in rebounds with 171 and shot 57 percent from the floor (144-251) to lead Caledonia in field goal percentage.
The Warriors also set new school records in 3-point attempts (829) and 3-point shots made (288). The Warriors’ 2,534 points scored in 32 games is also a new school record and equals a 79.18 ppg average.
The 41 made free throws against P-E-M March 1 ranked in the top 10 in the state. The 17 of 18 free throws made against Byron March 6 also ranks in the top 10 in free throw percentage (94.4 percent).
Diersen, in his 9th season, was named the Section 1AA Coach of the Year. Under Diersen, Caledonia has amassed a 186-67 record, and the 29 wins ties the school record in that category. With 14 players returning next season, Caledonia should again be a serious contender for another run to the Target Center.
