The Caledonia School Board voted to make up two snow days on Monday, March 24 and Monday, April 21. This decision was unanimous among those present at the March 17 regular board meeting (one absent) and will cut into the district’s spring break, which was originally set for Friday, April 18 and Monday, April 21.

Superintendent Ben Barton began the discussion by saying: “No matter what decision is made here, it will be unpopular with some. We just have to make the best decision we can and move forward.”

School Board President Michelle Werner said she would like to see both makeup days be student contact days, but Barton reported that the majority of teachers polled preferred one student contact day and one in-service day or one student contact day and adding minutes onto the end of every school day to make up the loss.

“Two days on the end (of the school year) seems to be the most unpopular,” Barton said.

Werner added that she heard similar sentiments from parents, who did not want to extend the school year.

Tom Reichenbacher, of St. Mary’s School, said his faculty and school board preferred March 24 and April 21.

The board made swift work of the decision and agreed with Barton’s recommendation.
