To the Editor:
I’m really dismayed by the letter from Commissioner Teresa Walter that appeared in several area papers last week. Commissioner Walter has repeatedly said, in public and in private, that she thinks there should be a ban on frac sand mining in Houston County. Yet her letter makes no reference whatsoever to a ban. Instead, she talks about doing exactly the opposite: developing an ordinance that will permit frac sand mining.
Further, at the commissioners’ meeting on Tuesday, March 25 Commissioner Justin Zymewski moved to establish a second committee — this one to write an ordinance to ban frac sand mining in Houston County. Commissioner Kjome seconded the motion.
Commissioner Walter, along with Commissioner Judy Storlie, voted against the motion. Commissioners Zymewski, Kjome and Schuldt voted for the motion to draft an ordinance to ban frac sand mining in Houston County.
Given such behavior, it’s extremely difficult to see how anyone can trust anything Commissioner Walter says on that subject. She says one thing, and then acts in a completely opposite way.
I’m very sorry about that; it seems to me that citizens should be able to determine — reliably — where their elected officials stand on important issues.
