The Caledonia/Spring Grove baseball squad opened up the spring season with a 6-2 loss to Chatfield April 8 at CHS.
Chatfield’s Jake Neis and Drew Hurley teamed up to throw a four-hitter against the Warriors while Kai Lidstrom took the loss for C/SG. The Gophers scored in the top of the first inning off Kyle Sorenson, who started the game for the Warriors. Zach Eggers led off the game with a walk and later scored on a base hit by Tommy Jech. Caledonia/Spring Grove took the lead in the bottom of the third when Seth Twite scored on an error and Tanner Gran scored on Tanner Langen’s sac fly.
But the Gophers regained the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs and took control with three more in the top of the seventh to get the 6-2 win. “It was close for the majority of the game,” coach Dave Konz said. “Chatfield strung together a few hits to open it up late. We had opportunities but didn’t capitalize. Situational hitting with runners in scoring position hurt us.”
Seth Twite was 1×3 with a run scored and Justin Burg and Josef Pettit were also 1×3.
Jake Neis got the win for Chatfield, going five innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. Kai Lidstrom gave up five runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in the loss for the Warriors, who will next play April 17 against P-E-M. at home.
