The Spring Grove/Caledonia softball squad split a pair of games at Chatfield to open up the season last week, winning game one 7-3 and losing game two 4-0.
The Lions got a solid effort from Sam Bratland on the mound in game one as Bratland tossed a nine-hitter with eight strikeouts while giving up three runs. Chatfield’s Brooke Irish took the loss, going the distance and giving up eight hits and only three earned runs.
SG/C scored three runs in the top of the first as Taylor Augedahl singled, Lottie Augedahl doubled and Bratland blasted a two-run home run to left-center field to give the Lions the early lead. The Augedahl duo then both scored again in the third inning on an error, base hit and two wild pitches for a 5-0 lead, but Chatfield got on the board with three base hits that scored lead-off hitter Sydney Irish. SG/C added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to get the 7-3 win. Taylor and Lottie Augedahl were both 2×4 with two runs scored and Bratland was 1×3 with 2 RBIs.
The Gophers got the win in the second game as Jennifer Hanson out-dueled Sophia Augedahl. Hanson held SG/C to just three hits to get the shutout. “I was really happy with our offensive production in game one but the bats kind of went quiet in game two” coach Shelly Anderson said. “Both our pitchers did a great job in their first outings of the season. Our defense needs some more reps on regular infields but is coming along as well.”
The Lions are scheduled to travel to P-E-M Thursday.
