Caledonia’s earthwalker will be visiting his hometown on May 21 and is planning a lively presentation about his historic feat. Dave Kunst, the first documented man to have ever walked around the world, will speak about his life-altering journey at the Four Seasons Community Center from 5-7 p.m. His visit is sponsored by the Caledonia Area Chamber of Commerce and will offer the community a chance to learn more about this man and his brothers, who have a dedication marker honoring them at North Park.
Kunst’s compelling story includes all the hallmarks of an epic adventure: family, love, politics and tragedy. The story begins in Waseca, Minn., in 1970 and climaxes on the night of Oct. 21, 1972, when Kunst and his brother, John, were attacked by bandits about 90 miles from Kabul, Afghanistan. John succumbed to his injuries and Kunst spent the next four months recovering before resuming the journey with his other brother Pete.
Decades have passed since Kunst’s journey ended and he now resides in California with the love of his life, Jenni Samuel, whom he met in Australia during the walk. He coauthored a book about his adventure titled “The Man Who Walked Around the World” with Clinton Trowbridge in 1979, and HBO Films is currently reviewing a final draft of a script based on the book.
Kunst is 73 years old and won’t have the opportunity to visit often, so the public is encouraged to mark their calendars now for the May 21 event. More information on the presentation will be forthcoming as the chamber finalizes details. Learn more about Kunst online at http://home.earthlink.net/~earthwalker1.
