Caledonia/Spring Grove baseball gears up for tournament

The Caledonia/Spring Grove baseball team split a double-header at GMLOK May 15, winning game one 4-2 and dropping a 6-4 decision in the second game.

The Warriors record is now 6-5 overall as Kai Lidstrom got the win in game one, going seven innings while giving up four hits and striking out five. The Warriors never trailed in the game as they took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when TJ Schultz led off with a base hit and scored on Harrison Speltz’s single. Leading 2-0, the Warriors saw GMLOK tie the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but C/SG regained the lead in the top of the fifth as Kyle Sorenson reached on an error and scored on another RBI single from Speltz. “We did a nice job of driving in runs when we had the opportunity,” said coach Dave Konz.

The Warriors took a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh as Tanner Gran reached to lead off the inning, stole second base and scored on Schultz’s base hit for the 4-2 final. Lidstrom then retired the Bulldogs in order in the bottom of the seventh.

The two teams then battled to a 4-4 tie after seven innings in game two. The Warriors tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on Tanner Langen’s base hit that scored Colton Lampert. The scoredstayed tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the third when the Warriors scored three runs on a triple from Langen that scored Speltz with Langen later scoring on the play.

Justin Burg tripled and Josef Pettit added the third three-bagger of the inning in his at bat to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead.

The Bulldogs closed the lead to a single run with two of their own in the top of the fifth and then tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh on an error and a base hit. The score stayed tied at 4-4 until the top of the eighth when GMLOK scored twice for the 6-4 win. Tanner Langen took the loss for the Warriors, who were scheduled to play at Dover-Eyota May 16 and finish the regular season May 20 at Wabasha-Kellogg.

On May 16, the Warriors fell to 7-7 as they lost at Dover-Eyota 6-4. Kyle Sorenson took the loss, giving up five hits with two strikeouts.

Justin Burg gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the second inning and Sorenson homered in the third to give the lead back to C/SG, 2-1.

But D-E scored three runs in the bottom of the third and added another run in the fourth to go up 6-2. The Warriors had a rally going in the top of the seventh as Pettit led off with a double and Austin Bauer singled. Elliott Cross the singled, scoring pinch runner Keenan Siminski. Sorenson then doubled, scoring Bauer to cut the lead to 6-4.  TJ Schultz struck out and Tanner Gran walked to keep the inning alive. Dover-Eyota’s Luke Franke then struck out Harrison Speltz and Tanner Langen to end the threat and the game.

Konz said “We hit the ball hard and well all night but in the end walks and a couple of errors led to unearned runs for D-E and cost us a win.”

The Warriors finished the regular season Tuesday at Wabasha-Kellogg and will begin tournament play May 22 when they travel to Lake City to take on the Tigers in the first game of the 1AA East tournament. Caledonia/Spring Grove is the #5 seed with Lake City getting the #4 seed. La Crescent is the #1 seed.

A win Thursday would advance the Warriors to Saturday where they would play the winner of the La Crescent vs. GMLOK game at 10 a.m.
