The Caledonia 13u baseball team traveled to Lakeville on July 18 – 20 to play in the 40 team AA Minnesota Baseball State tourney. The format of the tourney was three games of pool play, then the top two teams in each pool advanced to the championship bracket.
The Warriors were awarded the fifth overall seed in the tourney and ended up with Andover, Goodview and Eden Prairie in their pool.
Caledonia 12, Andover 1
The Warriors would win their first pool game handily, beating Andover 12-1 in five innings. Cole Folsom picked up the win pitching three innings of one run ball.
The big hit of the game came from the bat of Andrew Goergen as he lined a three-run homer over the 275’ sign in left center. Tyler Wiebke added three hits and Riley Gavin contributed a pair of hits in the victory.
Caledonia 8, Goodview 3
Casey Storlie started on the mound and came up big with three innings of shutout ball to get the win. Eric Augedahl had a two out 2 RBI single in the fourth inning to put the team up 3-0.
Alex Folz would put the game out of reach in the fifth inning with a towering grand slam over the left field fence for a 7-0 lead. The Warriors would close out Goodview by a final score of 8-3.
Caledonia 16, Eden Prairie 2
The last pool game saw the bats start hot for the Warriors as they scored five runs in the first inning and they continued to score each inning in the 16-2 victory over Eden Prairie.
Alex Folz, Kyle Cavanaugh, Casey Storlie, Tyler Wiebke, Tate Meiners, Riley Gavin, Evan Denstad and Payton Schott all contributed two hits each in the rout. With the win, the Warriors got the #1 seed in their pool and a spot in the championship bracket.
Caledonia 16, Prior Lake 7
Again, the young Warriors found their hitting stroke early by plating three runs in the first inning and four more in the third inning.
Prior Lake would also score with the Warriors adding a run in the first and a pair of runs in the third to keep it close. The Warriors would erupt for seven runs in the fourth inning and hold off Prior Lake by a final of 16-7.
Kyle Cavanaugh and Casey Storlie would pace the attack with three hits apiece. Tate Meiners, Andrew Goergen, Tyler Wiebke, Riley Gavin, Evan Denstad and Eric Augedahl would each add a pair of hits.
Cole Folsom pitched three strong innings to get another win and propel the team into the quarterfinals.
Caledonia 2, Minnetonka 3
Kyle Cavanaugh would lead off the bottom of the first with a single, steal second base and eventually score on a sacrifice fly by Tate Meiners for a quick 1-0 lead. Minnetonka would answer with a run in the top of the second to tie the score at 1-1.
Pitchers for both teams would dominate the game from this point as the score still stood at 1-1 after seven innings. Minnetonka would plate a run in the top of the eighth to take a 2-1 lead. A Tyler Wiebke single in the bottom of the eighth would score Tate Meiners to again knot the game at 2-2 heading to the ninth.
Minnetonka would score again in the top of the inning with a soft blooper to right with two outs to put the score at 3-2. The Warriors were unable to answer with a run in the bottom of the inning and lost the tough 3-2 game, ending their hopes of a repeat state title.
Team members are Kyle Cavanaugh, Tate Meiners, Casey Storlie, Alex Folz, Andrew Goergen, Tyler Wiebke, Riley Gavin, Eric Augedahl, Evan Denstad, Payton Schott and Cole Folsom. The team finished with a 19-1 tournament record and an overall record of 29-6 on the season.
