“The last time Caledonia held the Relay for Life the support was ‘awesome,’” Glenda Miller, an organizer of the event at both the county level and for Caledonia said.
While this year’s Relay will take place in Spring Grove, around February of 2015, planning will begin for when Caledonia will host Relay for the next two years.
“We will start around that time at looking at possible sites among other things,” Miller said.
Previously the site was around the elementary school. However, due to the condition of the sidewalk around the old elementary school building, other options are being considered.
“We’d like something a little more flat, maybe a little bigger,” Miller said.
Miller and Julie Renk are working at finding the best possible option for the Caledonia location.
When asked if the high school track and field location is being considered, Miller said it is on the table, along with several others.
“With the school being so far from the track there are some logistics to look at with the meal,” she said. “I also don’t know if they’d let us use the field. The football and soccer teams are very protective of their turf.”
She also pointed to the additional expense of tent rentals as something the committee considers.
Miller said she’ll be working closely again as in years past when Caledonia has hosted Relay with local businesses and community organizations.
The Relay for Life site is moved every two years from community to community. Following Spring Grove, Caledonia will host 2015 and 2016. Then Houston will host it for two years, followed by La Crescent. It will then return to Spring Grove.
