Diana Lynn Hammell, 65, of Caledonia, passed away on Sunday, Mar. 19, 2017, at Winneshiek Memorial Hospital, Decorah, Iowa.
Diana was born Oct. 21, 1951 in Chicago, Ill., to Clifford and DeeDee (Easterhouse) Moser. She attended school in Palatine and Galena, Ill., and graduated from high school in 1969. Diana married Joseph Hammell on Oct. 14, 1972, in Galena. They lived in Minneapolis for 3 years while Joe attended law school and Diana worked at the University of MN in the planning department. They moved to the Caledonia area in 1975.
Diana stayed home to raise her children and was an active volunteer, serving with the Balloon Rally Planning Committee, Three Rivers Knitting Guild Board, Houston County Fair Board, and Caledonia Green. She was a member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia, where she shared her talent of calligraphy and served as a lector, art environment member and Eucharistic minister. She worked at the Caledonia Argus as a production assistant and staff writer from 1998 until her retirement in 2017. She was an avid writer, reader, knitter, and crafter, and shared her talents by teaching others to do calligraphy and to knit. Her most cherished role was that of grandmother to her 10 grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; mother, DeeDee Moser; 4 children, Abe (Heather), Jed (Jamie), Luke (Heather), and Katrina (Luke) Nystrom; 10 grandchildren, Joey, Theron, Hadley, J.T., Coby, Bennett, Myles, Liam, Henrik and Anders; 2 brothers, Glenn (Cindy) and Neil (Toni) Moser; brothers and sisters-in-law, Pat (Nancy) Hammell, Ed (Jan) Hammell, Maggie (Tim) Nordwig, Anna (Gary) Meiners, Phyllis Yarber, Theresa (Gene) Ostert, and Donna (AK) Kinnard; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Mar. 23, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Matt Fasnacht will officiate, and burial will occur after the funeral lunch at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, New Albin, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Holy Family Hall and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday before the service at the church.
