Alfred F. Miller, 81, of rural La Crescent, passed away peacefully at Valley View Healthcare and Rehab on August 6, 2017.
Alfred was born on October 14, 1935, in Hokah, Minn., to John and Helen (Morman) Miller. He graduated from St. Peter’s High School in Hokah Class of 1953. He married Barbara Esch on September 18, 1965 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Caledonia, Minn.
Alfred farmed and also worked at Potter Cheese Factories, Hokah, Minn., and later at Great Lakes Cheese in Onalaska, Wis.
He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5115 in La Crescent. During his retirement, he enjoyed giving back to the community through volunteer work. He volunteered many hours at St. Peter’s School and delivered Meals on Wheels.
He also spent lots of time visiting the elderly and the sick in the community. For years, Alfred made rosaries out of Jobs Tears grown in his garden; which he proudly gave away to anyone who needed one and also to the children of the Tri-Parish who were making their 1st Communion. Card playing, gardening, and watching a good ball game were some other activities that Alfred enjoyed. Faith, family, and friends were all very important to Alfred who worked diligently to instill this in all of the lives he was a part of.
Alfred is survived by his loving family; wife, Barb; two children and grandchildren, Tony (Becky) Miller of rural La Crescent, Minn., Helen (Travis) Bollinger of rural Rushford, Minn.; Jordyn Holland and Terence Bollinger.
Alfred is also survived by four siblings, Donna (Ernie) Sloan of Hokah, Minn., Jim (Glenda) Miller of Caledonia, Minn., Irene (Darrell) Schimek of Kenosha, Wis., and Carolyn (Will) Winchester of Mt. Pleasant, Wis.; brothers and sisters-in-law, John (Donna) Esch of Dorchester, Iowa, Peter (Betty) Esch and Joesph Esch of Caledonia; also many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom he greatly loved and enjoyed spending time with.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John C. “Jack” Miller; father and mother-in-law, Heron and Elizabeth Esch.
A Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m., on Saturday, August 12, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Hokah. Fr. Pratap R. Salibindla officiated and burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Hokah.
Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m., on Friday, at the church, where a rosary was said at 7 p.m. Friends called one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia is assisting the family with arrangements.
