Howard Craig Schultz, 64, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 7, 2017 of natural causes.
He was born on June 2, 1953 to Jyles and Merle (Huffey) Schultz in Caledonia, Minn.
Howard grew up in rural Caledonia and at an early age shared in the responsibilities of livestock management, crop production and daily operations at the family dairy farm in Winnebago Township.
In high school, Howard was active in wrestling and football and was the 1970 Homecoming King. He attended and was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Caledonia.
In 1973, Howard graduated from the University of Minnesota, Crookston, with an Applied Science degree in Soils Management and throughout his years in farming he sought to maximize crop yields through double- and triple-cropping while adhering to principles of good husbandry and soil health.
Howard married Joan Phillips in 1989. He adopted her daughter, Rebecca Mae, and together in 1990, Howard and Joan adopted an infant son, Alexander David. Later, Howard and Joan divorced.
Howard was a hard-working family man who supplemented his years of farming with over-the-road truck driving for Schultz Transit and Fleming. Following the sale of his farms—the “Sheehan Place” and the “McKee Place,” Howard worked as an Agronomist for Land O’ Lakes CropLan Genetics’ “Answer Farm” near Webster City, Iowa. He was the lead field specialist for seed trials throughout the Midwest, Southwest and Southeast regions of the United States.
His good nature, his kindness and his generosity will not be forgotten by those who knew him and the man that he was—a good father, a good son, a good brother, a good neighbor. Death cannot divide the bonds of family and friendship nor erase the precious memories born out of shared experiences, whether of joy or of sorrow.
He is survived by his son Alexander of Webster City, Iowa, and his daughter, Rebecca Mae (Brian) Cichelli of Oakland, Calif.; two granddaughters, Kendra Schultz and Apolena Cichelli; two brothers, David (Loni) and Gregory, both of Caledonia; two sisters, Sandra Vitrano of Milwaukee, Wis., and Diane (Michael) Fields of Caledonia; nephews Michael (Heather) and Christopher (Mary) Vitrano, Derek Schultz, Jesse Schultz and Dane (Mayuko) Wolf.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Lorelei Schultz.
Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, August 16 at Faith United Methodist Church, 2020 Superior St., Webster City, Iowa. Visitation one hour prior to the service.
The family encourages that memorials be given to one’s charity of choice.
