Smoke was seen billowing for miles on Friday morning at the Bob and Lori Ellenz farm on County Highway 10 as round bales and a pole shed went up in flames.

Fire fighters from Spring Grove, Houston and Caledonia responded to the blaze and spent most of the day on site to make sure it was fully extinguished.

“When we got here the structure was already down,” said Caledonia fire fighter Matt Klug.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire.

The fire started at approximately 6:20 a.m., according to Caledonia Fire Chief Todd Lemke.

When it was determined that the fire was a large one, the departments of Houston and Spring Grove came over to assist as well.

Around 8 a.m., a bull-dozer was on site to help squelch the smoldering round bales.

“You can’t fight this type of fire with water,” Lemke said. “You have to put it out by burying it.”

So the tedious and cautious work continued into the morning of dousing the flames by smothering them.
