“The problem has tripled in the past six weeks. I’m sure it’s a sign of the times. We used to get two or three a week. Now, we’re trying to track down 12 to 20 each week. It’s really starting to cost the city a lot of money to deal with.”

Hokah man recalls bagging monster white tail buck

Word of a monster white tail buck roaming the thick woods and steep valleys of eastern Houston County has been circulated by bow and gun hunters for a number of years. Quite a few folks have caught glimpses of this massive buck, but nothing more. Was this big white tail really as large as people speculated?

City approves plans for in-town launch for upcoming balloon rally
|
In an effort to bring the event closer to Caledonia residents, the Caledonia Balloon Rally Committee is considering staging the annual event in town this December, instead of at the Houston County Airport. Committee member Randy Weibel presented the idea at the Oct. 13 Caledonia City Council meeting.

Two men arrested in area drug bust
|
The Houston County Sheriffs Office in conjunction with the SE Minnesota Drug Task Force, La Crescent Police Department and the La Crosse Police Department arrested a James L. Blackburn age 46 of La Crosse, Wis. and a Deante L. House, age 22 of Chicago, Ill. on Thursday evening. Both defendants appeared before Judge James Fabian of Houston County District Court on Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 at 11:45 a.m.
Deante L. House was charged with second degree–sale 3 grams or more–felony. Mr. Deante House is also a fugitive from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. Bail has been set in the amount of $80,000 unconditional or $40,000 with conditions. He is currently being held in jail pending court appearance set for Oct. 27 at 2:15 p.m.
James L. Blackburn was charged with second degree–sale 3 grams or more–felony.
Mr. Blackburn is also a fugitive from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. Bail has been set in the amount of $120,000 unconditional or $60,000 with conditions. He is currently being held in jail pending next court appearance on Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m.

Local police department part of ‘Click It or Ticket’ seat belt enforcement
|
While Minnesota motorists are buckling up more than ever, unbelted motorists still account for nearly half of all traffic deaths. To prevent unbelted traffic deaths, Caledonia officers were part of enhanced patrols Oct. 10–19 during a statewide Safe & Sober “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement sweep.

State audit finds ‘issues’ but no noncompliance of county books
|
Carla Blahnik and Nancy Thomas of the State Auditor’s Office reviewed the recently completed audit of the county’s books for 2007 with the Houston County Board during the Oct. 14 meeting. While there were a number of issues the county will need to address, the state audit found “no instances of noncompliance material to the financial statements of Houston County.”

Green Acres: What landowners should know about recent changes
|
Houston County Assessor Tom Dybing explained the original intent of Minnesota’s Green Acres program was farmland preservation. With urban sprawl reaching out from cities into the countryside, farmers (especially in the Metro Area) were facing rising taxes, due to nearby development. This forced many to sell family farms. The Green Acres program was a way in which county assessors could tax an enrolled farmer at a rate that farmland would bring as opposed to what nearby land was bringing when sold to developers.
