Houston County will continue using its current land use plan
By a unanimous vote, the Houston County Board approved a motion to leave the county’s land use plan as is. The county is required every 10 years to review the land use plan in place, and decide, after receiving public input, if changes need to be made.

County finance director is on board

“I’m impressed with the county board, and the way county government is conducted here. I was used to a 10-person city council that was very structured. At my previous position, the city council had to form committees for everything. The committees would report to the council, and most issues took at least one more meeting before things were approved. It’s much more ‘hands off’ here. I think this is a much more efficient way of doing things.”

Area WW II vets travel to D.C. to view memorial

Among the contingency of World War Two veterans from the Caledonia area, who left early Wednesday morning on the Freedom Flight from La Crosse to Washington, D.C. were from right, Gerald “Jug” Noel, Chuck Rollins, and Del Cochran. Also pictured is Loveless Eikens American Legion Post 191 Commander Joel Boone. The local American Legion paid for the transportation to and from La Crosse. A total of 14 veterans from the Caledonia area were among the 125 WW II vets, who flew out of La Crosse early Wednesday to attend the ceremony in Washington, and will return Wednesday night. Harvest Time

Combines with bean heads were a common sight last week, as the push is on to harvest the soybean crop. Warm, dry weather in September sped up the maturing and drying process, and farmers were able to get out into the fields about the same time this year as they did last year. According to early reports, yields aren’t as good as the record-breaking yields farmers enjoyed in 2007. If the weather holds, the majority of the bean crop should be out this week, and farmers will be zeroing in on the corn crop.       Photo by Charlie Warner

 
EF Library Services buys Savia of Caledonia

Bob Engen of Caledonia and Karen Folstad of Spring Grove announced last week that E.F. Library Services, LLC of Spring Grove has acquired the assets of Savia Library Services, which has offices in downtown Caledonia and Topeka, Kan. According to a press release issued by Engen and Folstad, the 11 Caledonia employees, and the four in Topeka will retain their current positions.

Wall Street’s shake-up doesn’t seem to be affecting Main Street
Last week when the United State House of Representatives voted down the proposed $700 billion Wall Street bailout, the stock market took a nose dive like it never had since Black Tuesday, Oct. 29, 1929. On Sept. 30, the U.S. stock market lost 777 points, which translated into a one-day loss of $1.2 trillion.
