City council, fire department mend fences during Sept. 24 meeting
|
A “clearing of the air” occurred in the Caledonia City Council chambers Sept. 24 when the city council, a large contingency of Caledonia firemen, and several representatives of the Rural Fire Association met for two hours. A special meeting was called to settle some differences between the city council and the fire department when it came to purchasing equipment.

UffDa Fest this weekend in Spring Grove

Our neighbors to the west will be celebrating their fall festival this Saturday with UffDa Fest. For the schedule of events lined up for the fun-filled day, see page 10. One of the promotions of the annual fall festival is the scarecrow contest. Shown above are two of the downtown displays.

The first annual UffDa Fest will be held this Saturday in Spring Grove. Festival events are planned for people of all ages and interests, and all events will take place in and around Viking Memorial Park in downtown Spring Grove.

Sexual predators forum to be held in Hokah
|
The Hokah and La Crescent Police Departments are hosting a community dialogue surrounding sexual predators on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hokah Fire Department, 9 Mill Street.
Come to the free forum to hear panelists from the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the Jacob Wetterling Foundation, and Houston County Women’s Resources, along with local law enforcement discuss questions such as how safe are our communities, and how safe are our children. Some of these professionals assess, supervise, monitor, and study sexual predators that live among us. Some of these professionals work with the victims and their families.
This free community forum is your opportunity to learn about characteristics of sexual predators and also to learn how to recognize signs of sexual abuse. This dialog will help you understand what you need to do to protect yourself, your family, and your community. Following the panel discussion, you will have the opportunity to ask the panelists questions.

Homecoming 2008 is being held this week at Caledonia Area High School. The student body selected five senior girls and five senior boys as Homecoming Queen and King candidates. Tanner Winjum, the son of Troy and Jennifer Winjum of rural Caledonia, has been full of many surprises during the first 30 months of his young life. And the little boy with sparkling eyes and big a smile has had to endure many more medical procedures in his short life than most folks are subjected to in a lifetime.

Bundles of Love project will help many in Houston County area

Winona County sheriff thanks Houston County for assistance
|
In the true spirit of cooperation, Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand attended the Sept. 23 Houston County Board meeting to personally thank the county, Sheriff Doug Ely, and his staff for all the assistance provided during “one of the most devastating years I have experienced in all my years in law enforcement.” Brand noted the 2007 floods, where five persons perished, the various drowning victims in the Mississippi River near Winona, as well as the family that perished in the Mississippi near La Crescent.
