School levies below maximum limit
|
The Board of Education of Caledonia Area Public Schools approved a levy of $2.47 million payable in 2009. That the levy was below a level that would require the customary Truth In Taxation hearing. One person attended those hearings in the last five years.

Highway 76 is open to traffic
|
|
After being closed for more than two months, the eight-mile section of Highway 76 from Caledonia to Eitzen open this past weekend. Even though road crews are finishing up the shoulder work, the highway was open to through traffic.

‘Strike Out Breast Cancer’ bowling tournament Oct. 18

Bowlers of all ages can have some fun participating in an 8-pin no-tap tournament and help with the continuing fight against breast cancer at the same time.

Local elementary students enjoy Yellow Troll's Treasure

The Yellow Troll's Treasure was presented by the Climb
Theatre Wednesday to Caledonia Area Elementary School students. The
presentation was both entertaining and educational- teaching young
students about self control and when to wait, stop, and think.

Some folks in Caledonia may have had a stiff neck last week,
after watching a robotic machine power wash the two large blue water
towers. The city hired Water Tower Cleaning and Coating of Lodi, Wis.
to power wash the towers. Rus Fiene, shown at right, invented the
remote-controlled power washer, which is operatec from the ground. “I’m
scared of heights,” Fiene admitted. He invented the remote-controlled
system several years ago, and now has three crews washing towers all
over the Midwest. It does take one person, Tom Berendes in the photo below
right, to move the support straps around the top of the tower.
Fiene’s company cleans about 800 water towers each year. It
took Fiene and Berendes two days to complete the task.

County to buy Meyer Furniture building to relieve space issues
|
If all goes as planned, Houston County will own another parcel of property and building in Caledonia. The Houston County Board unanimously approved a motion to enter into a purchase agreement with Dale Meyer for his furniture store building on Highways 76 and 44. Meyer, who has health issues, is currently holding a going out of business sale.
