City council approves five percent levy increase for 2009
|
The Caledonia City Council approved the proposed levy increase for 2009 at five percent, which would generate $519,715. Last year the city’s levy was $494,952. That action took place during the Aug. 25 council meeting.

Making progress on Hwy 76
|
|

Warm, sunny weather has helped with the progress of the Highway 76 repaving project between Caledonia and Eitzen. Last week crews were putting the final lift on a section of road just north of Eitzen. One mile-long wet spot near the Dunromin Campground turn-off has slowed progress. Officials noted with good weather, the project should be done within two weeks. Photo by Charlie Warner

As of Friday, noon, five persons have thrown their hats in the ring for the four Caledonia City Council seats that will be up for election this fall.

Flood clean-up issues are still being discussed by county board
|
While it’s been more than a year since the floods of August 2007 devastated Southeast Minnesota and Houston County, work continues with the clean-up of the worst natural disaster to hit the area since it was settled more than 150 years ago. Emergency Service Coordinator Kurt Kuhlers gave a progress report to the Houston County Board during the Aug. 26 meeting.

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, Houston County residents will be asked to pare down the field of 13 candidates running for three county commissioners seats to six. The opening of three commissioner seats has created quite a bit of interest in county politics.
