The Caledonia City Council approved variance requests for two property owners, and the sign specifications for a third property owner during the Feb. 11 meeting. The variance requests involved new construction projects, while the sign specifications are for a new business coming to downtown Caledonia.

Local fire department will be getting a new tanker truck
|
The Caledonia Fire Department will be adding another new piece of equipment to fight rural fires. The Caledonia City Council unanimously approved a motion to partner with the Rural Fire Association (RFA) to purchase a 3,300 gallon truck during the Feb. 11 council meeting. The city and RFA will split the cost of purchasing the new tanker, which will not exceed $145,000. The new tanker will replace a 1974 tanker that has far exceeded its usefulness and has been considered a safety liability for some time.

Having the proper lines of communication in place, especially during a disaster, is imperative for law enforcement and emergency service units. That was quite evident during the flash floods of August 18 and 19 of 2007.

Fire destroys home in Brownsville
|
On Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 12:56 a.m. the Houston County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an On Star operator stating a passerby travelling on Hwy 26 reported a house that was fully engulfed in flames on a hillside in Brownsville.
The Brownsville Fire Department was paged to 817 2nd Street. Upon their arrival they were unable to locate any persons that may have been living there.
The Brownsville Fire Department requested assistance from Hokah and La Crescent Fire Departments. The home was a total loss.
At 11:30 a.m. the Houston County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Fire Marshall began their investigation into the cause of the fire and the possibility that a person may have been inside the residence.
At 12:05 p.m. Sunday a victim was found in the debris.
Identification of the victim is not being made until the coroners report has been completed.
The State Fire Marshall stated that there was no way to determine the cause of the fire.

City council wants to work out CJC differences with county
|
|
The city of Caledonia is not opposed of having Houston County construct
the proposed 82,000 square foot criminal justice center (CJC) within
the city limits. In fact, according to discussion at the Feb. 11
meeting, all five council members indicated they want to move forward
with the county’s project.

As he entered the front doors of the local high school, Doc spotted one of his athletes. “How’s your ankle doing?” he asked the Caledonia senior, who is a member of the Warrior girls basketball team. “Getting better,” she replied.

The idea stems from a discussion Pastor Lane Zaffke had with a member of his congregation.
Zaffke owns several acres of land near Spring Grove. On his property he has about 12 acres of Maple trees.
